Introduction to the Research Question

In this research study, I would like to explore the factors that contribute to the depletion of a water point. A water point is an installation such as a well or a tap from where water is drawn out. The factors like region population around the water point, the water basin level, the water management body, the kind of extraction the water point uses such a electric pump or rope are some of the several factors that can be responsible for the depletion of a water point. The purpose of this research study is to find the best predictors that contribute to the operating condition of a water point.

The reason I have chosen this topic is because I would like to help Taarifa, an open source web application that is designed to close the citizen feedback loops. They are currently working on building an interactive dashboard visualization project in association with the Ministry of Water at Tanzania that involves the identification of damaged water point installations. By identifying the current state of the water point, necessary steps can be taken by the ministry to improve the facilities. Such a timely prediction will help the ministry to improve its service towards its people and will also save the water.

A smart understanding of which waterpoints will fail can improve maintenance operations and ensure that clean, potable water is available to communities across Tanzania.If I’m successful in providing a good enough prediction model, it would substantially help the Ministry of Water and the people of Tanzania to manage their water point resources.
